Why would traditional Austrian cuisine come alive at a San Diego beach winery? One word explains it all. That word is Blaufränkisch.
Blaufränkisch (blahw-frank-ish) is a grape that originates in Austria and now thrives in Washington State. San Diego urban winery, Gianni Buonomo Vintners, brings in the grapes from Washington and vinifies them into world-class wine. Their 2013 Blaufränkisch just won a gold medal in international competition at Hilton Head Island alongside some of the most prestigious names in the world of wine.
“It was unbelievable to win a gold in that company. Now it’s time to celebrate!” exclaimed winemaker Keith Rolle. “We’re going to release this beautiful 2014 Blaufränkisch and pair it with traditional Austrian dishes prepared by Chef Peter Bolter from the award-winning Kaiserhof Restaurant.”
“My Paprikahendl, or Paprika Chicken with egg noodles, will instantly transport you back to the old country,” explains Chef Peter Bolter, owner of Kaiserhof Restaurant. “Paprika is a very important element to dishes from this Austria-Hungary region. It is sweet. Not smoky. The dish is the perfect complement to this wonderful Blaufränkisch.”
Also included on the menu is a cold plate of cured meats along with rustic, old-world breads and cheeses. And of course, potato salad.
The gala celebration begins at 6:30 PM on Saturday, June 2, 2018.
Plenty of Gianni Buonomo wines paired with traditional Austrian bites make for the perfect
